How to Fish Bosses: All Baits and Unlock Order

The short answer

How to Fish mixes required story bosses with optional boss fish. The required route is Spider Crab, Giant Piranha, Pufferfish, Albatross, Bowhead Whale, and Mutated Bowhead Whale; other large catches use purchasable boss lures for collection or profit. Prepare the correct bait and weapon before casting, because a boss can escape or wipe an unready team.

Game8’s boss table lists 12 entries and the G2A table corroborates most island-and-bait pairs. The mutated whale’s Game8 row says its lure was still to be announced, but multiple complete walkthroughs show the defeated Bowhead Whale body being dropped into the Volcano to trigger the transformation. That observed quest action is used here instead of inventing a conventional lure.

How Boss Progression Works

Required bosses are part of an NPC exchange. You first obtain a unique bait, summon the target, defeat it, and return a specific drop to receive keys or Radar coordinates. If the next marker does not appear, check that the trophy was returned rather than assuming the fight alone completed the quest.

Optional boss fish use tiered Boss Lures sold on later islands. They can fill encyclopedia gaps or provide high listed values, but they do not all unlock new locations. Read the active objective and the all islands route before spending a boss lure.

Story Boss Route

Spider Crab is caught with the Empty Beer Can after giving a Beer to the Lighthouse Keeper. Use a Knife, wait for its stunned state, and attack in short bursts. The dedicated first boss guide covers the exact opening sequence.

Giant Piranha uses Modified Leech received from the Forest quest NPC. It creates smaller piranhas, so area damage such as Dynamite can control the swarm while a firearm focuses the boss. Return its skeleton to unlock Desert.

Pufferfish uses the Carrot obtained by trading an endangered fish on Island 3. It rolls, grows, and creates poison pressure, making movement and an upgraded SMG more useful than stationary damage. See the Pufferfish strategy for preparation and arena use.

Albatross is not reeled in with a normal lure. Catch and defeat Tuna, place it on dry ground, and prepare for an aerial fight. A Sniper Rifle is effective because the boss circles beyond comfortable SMG range and attacks from above.

Bowhead Whale is summoned with the Fish Bucket after the scientist receives five fish. Defeat it, carry the body to the top of the Volcano, and drop it into the lava to begin the Mutated Bowhead Whale fight. Return the final required drop for the keys home.

One upgraded weapon is more dependable than several base weapons. Knife is the practical early option; Pistol and Dynamite cover Forest; SMG provides sustained Desert damage; Sniper Rifle answers the airborne Albatross; and Assault Rifle is the strongest verified endgame purchase. The weapons guide lists availability, base price, and role.

Carry food and clear inventory space before using unique bait. Video playthroughs repeatedly lose weapons after deaths, accidentally cast boss bait, or consume a required body. These are useful warnings, but exact damage numbers from the videos are not treated as universal facts.

In co-op, assign one player to preserve the bait or trophy. Spread around the arena so one attack does not down everyone, and revive only when the boss is not covering the body. Multiple attackers shorten damage windows, but they do not replace the correct lure or quest handoff.

Common Boss Problems

If a boss does not spawn, verify that the correct rod and bait are equipped and that the quest NPC has completed the exchange. Carrot, Modified Leech, and Fish Bucket are not ordinary shop lures. The all baits guide explains their sources.

If a boss disappears, it may have escaped after the fight timer or returned to water. Do not chase into deep water where drowning adds another failure. Pull encounters onto open land, watch the health and escape indicators, and use safe attack windows.

If progression remains locked after victory, locate the required trophy and return it. Spider Crab leads to boat keys, Giant Piranha to new coordinates, Pufferfish to the next marker, Albatross to the Volcano route, and the final whale drop to the ending. Selling or eating the body can force a repeat encounter.

Optional Bosses and Collection

Sunfish and The Old Pike share Beginner Boss Lure, while Blue Shark and Goblin Shark use later boss-lure tiers. Tuna is unusual because it is both a boss fish with a listed sale value and a required bait item for Albatross. Collection players should consult all fish before turning an optional boss into money.

Bing Bong appears in Game8’s boss list with Coconut on Island 3, but the collected material provides little combat detail. Its bait-and-location row is retained, while unverified attacks and rewards are not invented. Any build-specific difference should be marked [Pending verification] during site updates.

Optional bosses are best attempted after the current island’s required weapon upgrade, not immediately after buying the lure. Clear inventory space, preserve food, and confirm whether the catch is missing from the encyclopedia before starting. If it is already recorded and its listed value does not justify the bait and ammunition, ordinary fishing may be the more efficient choice.

Follow the full walkthrough for the story order, open Island 3 for the Pufferfish quest, or use Island 4 for Tuna and Albatross. Players starting at Lighthouse should continue with the focused Spider Crab guide. Check the bait list when an encounter will not spawn.
