How to Fish Pufferfish Boss: Bait and Strategy

The short answer

Pufferfish is the required boss on Island 3. Speak with the Tourist, catch a Needlefish, Seahorse, or Bowlfish using Standard Lure, and trade it for the Carrot bait. Equip an upgraded SMG, keep moving in curves around trees or the shop, avoid the purple poison trail, and return the Pufferfish Fin to unlock Island 4.

Pufferfish Location and Quest

Pufferfish belongs to Island 3, the Desert or Palm Trees destination reached after Giant Piranha. Find the Tourist leaning near a palm tree in an orange life preserver and speak to him before fishing for the quest item. He asks for an endangered creature and holds the bait required for the boss.

The island numbering can look inconsistent in external guides that exclude Lighthouse from the count. This site treats Lighthouse as Island 1, Forest as Island 2, and the Pufferfish destination as Island 3. Use the Island 3 guide for the complete local route.

How to Get Carrot Bait

Buy or equip the Fishing Rod and Standard Lure, then fish in the Island 3 pool. Needlefish, Seahorse, and Bowlfish are the three verified endangered creatures accepted by the Tourist. Inspect the catch before selling it, because its model alone may not make the category obvious.

Give one accepted endangered fish to the Tourist and receive the Carrot. The Game8 boss table, IGN, PC Gamer, and the full walkthroughs all agree that Carrot summons Pufferfish. Keep it unequipped until weapons, food, and the arena are ready.

If an endangered creature does not appear immediately, continue with Standard Lure rather than switching randomly between boss lures. The all fish table lists every confirmed Island 3 creature, while the bait guide separates Standard Lure from quest bait. Inspect each catch before selling so a valid quest fish is not discarded.

Best Weapon and Upgrades

An upgraded SMG is the most consistent recommendation across IGN, PC Gamer, GamesRadar, and the video playthroughs. Its sustained fire lets you damage the boss while moving, which is critical once the rolling and poison pressure increase. A Compensator and ammunition upgrades make that movement easier to control.

The source guides disagree on whether Shotgun is a useful alternative: PC Gamer reports failing with it, while GamesRadar says its close range can work because Pufferfish stays nearby. Treat Shotgun as a fallback, not the default. Do not replace a working upgraded SMG solely to test it.

IGN recommends placing a prepared Dynamite pile and detonating it when Pufferfish reaches the area. This can shorten the early phase, but it adds self-damage risk and is not required by the other guides. Use it only if you understand the throw and detonation controls; otherwise spend the money on the main weapon and food.

Pufferfish Attack Pattern

Pufferfish rolls quickly in a straight line and becomes less agile when forced to turn. It expands as it takes damage, becoming a larger target but also increasing the danger around its path. GamesRadar’s small-circle strafing and PC Gamer’s terrain-based kiting describe the same core answer: never give it a clean straight chase.

At the larger stage, Pufferfish leaves a purple poison trail. Crossing or standing in that trail can drain health rapidly, so watch the ground rather than focusing only on the health bar. Trees, the shop, and the cooking area can interrupt its line, but this guide does not rely on the boss becoming stuck.

Step-by-Step Fight Strategy

  1. Fill health and hunger, prepare food, and clear inventory space for the quest drop.
  2. Upgrade the SMG and improve recoil control or ammunition as funds allow.
  3. Move to open ground near useful trees or buildings, then equip the Carrot.
  4. Cast and begin circling rather than retreating in one straight line.
  5. Fire while moving, using terrain to force repeated turns.
  6. Watch for the purple trail after the boss expands and change your circle before it closes.
  7. Collect the Fin and return it to the Tourist.

The transcripts reinforce two practical points: players who stop to aim are caught by the roll, and under-upgraded attempts take long enough for poison mistakes to accumulate. They also include occasional terrain traps and explosive setups. Those are observations, not required mechanics, so the standard strategy remains movement, controlled SMG fire, and safe ground.

Solo and Co-op Adjustments

Solo players should use a wide, predictable loop and reload only after terrain creates separation. Keep food on a known slot and avoid opening the inventory while the boss has a straight path. A failed attempt may drop gear, so recover it before purchasing duplicates.

In co-op, split firing angles and keep the targeted player moving. Other players can revive a downed teammate, but the poison trail can make a body unsafe to approach. Wait for the boss to roll away before committing to the revive.

Do not let different players scatter the boss between several unrelated loops. Pick one section of the arena, agree on the direction of movement, and keep the Carrot carrier responsible for starting only when everyone is ready. See max players for hosting and lobby behavior.

Common Problems

If Pufferfish does not spawn, confirm that the Tourist accepted an endangered fish and that Carrot is equipped on the Fishing Rod. Standard Boss Lure catches Blue Shark instead; it does not replace Carrot. Recheck the active quest before buying more lures.

If poison keeps ending the attempt, shorten the fight with better upgrades and widen the movement route. Do not cross the existing purple line just to maintain aim. The boss becomes easier to hit as it grows, so survival is more valuable than stationary accuracy.

If Island 4 remains locked, pick up the Fin and return it to the Tourist. Defeating the boss is only the combat half of the progression exchange. The next coordinates should then appear on the Radar.

Reward and Next Step

The Tourist accepts the Pufferfish Fin and provides the coordinates for Island 4, shown as the newly added red Radar destination in the walkthrough sources. Travel to the Rocks or Barn island, buy Professional Lure, and begin preparing for Tuna and Albatross. Continue with the Island 4 guide or return to the boss list for the remaining order.
