Your First Ten Minutes
The opening loop is simple once its unusual last step is clear. Cast the Crab Fishing Rod into the water, reel in a creature, drop it on land, and attack it before it escapes back to the sea. You can then sell the defeated catch for money or eat it when hunger is becoming a problem.
Clams around the shore are the safest starting resource because collecting them does not require equipment. Use them to fund the rod instead of buying optional gear immediately. The recorded solo and multiplayer playthroughs repeatedly lost time by eating every early catch, missing the throw control, or letting a hooked creature reach the water again.
Keep health and hunger separate in your planning. Food helps sustain a run, but entering a boss fight with poor equipment or low health still creates an avoidable failure. The full How to Fish walkthrough explains the longer progression after this opening.
What to Buy First
Your first required purchase is the Crab Fishing Rod. A Knife is the most useful early combat goal because multiple written guides and playthroughs show it handling ordinary catches efficiently and giving the Spider Crab fight a much safer damage window. Brass Knuckles are cheaper, but spending too much on temporary early gear delays the weapon that actually solves the first major fight.
Buy the Radar before leaving the Lighthouse, even if the boat keys are already in your inventory. It displays unlocked destinations as colored markers and is the practical way to navigate the open water. In solo play, stop the boat to check it; in co-op, one player can drive while another watches the Radar and calls the direction.
Avoid gambling during the opening. The Beginner Guide source explicitly recommends saving money, while several video runs show players losing progress by feeding valuable catches into chance-based systems. Put early income into required bait, a dependable weapon, the Radar, and later island equipment instead.
How to Start the Spider Crab Quest
Talk to the Lighthouse Keeper to learn that a long-legged creature has been stealing his beer. Buy a Beer and hand it to him rather than simply consuming it; he gives back the Empty Beer Can needed as boss bait. Equip that can on the Crab Fishing Rod and cast to summon the Spider Crab.

Do not cast the Empty Beer Can the moment you receive it if you still have only bare hands or weak health. The multiplayer and solo transcripts both record immediate defeats when players summoned the boss before preparing. Fish for enough money to buy a Knife, restore your condition, and leave food accessible before starting the encounter.
During the fight, keep moving and wait for the Spider Crab to become stunned or confused before committing to melee attacks. Short bursts are safer than standing next to it and trading damage. See the dedicated first boss guide for its bait, attack windows, escape timer, and reward.
Learn the Core Fishing Loop
Different islands introduce new rods and lure tiers, but the basic loop stays consistent: equip the right bait, cast, reel the catch to land, prevent its escape, then decide whether to sell, cook, eat, or preserve it. The all fish guide maps creatures to islands and bait so you do not waste casts. The bait guide is the faster reference when you already know what creature you need.
Ordinary fish are primarily an income and food source, while some catches are quest items or bait for another encounter. Never sell an unusual boss catch until you have checked the current island objective. Tuna is used to summon the Albatross, and the Bowhead Whale is required for the final transformation at the Volcano.
Cooking is useful when an island provides a safe cooking point, but do not assume every observed sale amount is a universal price. Video runs sometimes include bonuses, variants, gambling results, or cooked catches without clearly separating them. Use the verified fish price list for base values.
How Progression Works
Each main island follows a recognizable chain: meet the quest NPC, acquire the required bait, summon and defeat the progression boss, return the requested drop, and receive coordinates for the next island. The five-island order is Lighthouse, Forest, Desert or Palm Trees, Rocks or Barn, and Volcano. Some sources number only the destinations after Lighthouse, but this site consistently treats Lighthouse as Island 1.
On Forest Island, upgrade to the Fishing Rod, gather the required leeches, obtain the Modified Leech, and defeat the Giant Piranha. Island 3 asks for an endangered fish before granting the Carrot used for Pufferfish. Island 4 turns a Tuna into Albatross bait, while Island 5 culminates in the Bowhead Whale and its mutated form.
This structure makes random grinding less effective than following the active quest. Fishing still provides the money needed for weapons and lures, but the NPC objective is what unlocks the next destination. Use the all islands guide whenever the next Radar marker does not appear.
Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not consume the Beer when the Lighthouse quest needs an Empty Beer Can.
- Do not summon Spider Crab before buying a useful weapon and restoring health.
- Do not leave without the Radar or try to read it while driving solo.
- Do not sell Tuna, Bowhead Whale, or another catch named by the active quest.
- Do not spread money across every weapon; improve one dependable option before replacing it.
- Do not treat a Drip creature as an ordinary catch until you understand its collection and Reel of Fortune use.
These are not theoretical edge cases. They recur across the four transcripts: players lose bait by consuming it, drop weapons on death, summon bosses accidentally, and sell a required creature before reading the objective. A brief inventory check before every boss saves more time than another round of unfocused fishing.
Solo and Co-op Tips
Solo players control the pace and keep all purchases in one inventory, but must manage navigation, food, fishing, and boss pressure alone. Co-op players can revive one another, split navigation roles, and attack from different angles. The current lobby limit is covered in the max players guide, including the patch-specific increase reported after launch.
Co-op does not remove preparation. A group that summons a boss with weak weapons can still lose equipment and spend time recovering it. Agree who carries the quest bait, keep required drops away from players who may eat or sell them, and revive safely rather than clustering inside an attack.
What to Do Next
After Spider Crab falls, take the boat keys and purchase the Radar. Follow the new marker to Forest Island, buy the Fishing Rod, and begin the Giant Piranha quest. From there, continue with the full walkthrough, or open the weapons guide before committing your money to the next loadout.
